Attitude Problems

From my interview, apart of the architectural problems, I found out that there is a serious attitude problem in social welfare centres in Malaysia.

1. The Orphans
-The orphans are not independent because they are being overprotective. They live in a world where all things are provided free so when they grow up, they tend to expect the same. They have no manners and bad attitude towards the elderly, they used to live with the same age groups so they do not have the chance to learn how to show filial piety. They are self-centered because they use to live for their own without caring about others' feelings. They rejected low quality things and they expect everyone to serve them and treat them as they are princess or princes.

Solution: Education
-We should not only give free food, money or too much love to them without teaching them on how to be a good man in the future. We have to educate them with all these moral values which is very important for them.

2. The Old Folks
-It is not whether the facilities in old folks home are enough or not, it is the problem that facilities are provided but the elderly just do not want to use it. They refuse to learn new things because they are lazy to do so. They have the mindset that: we are old, we just want to rest. They refuse to do exercises but they just want to lie down on their beds and sleep or smokes. They are negative and passive, they do not see hope in their life and just doing nothing and wasting time.
Even in the old folks home, they do not have communication with each other, each of them just lie down on their own bed and watch tv or sleep. They are self-enclosed.

Solution: Change their mindset & the environment
-Counselling.

-Organise trips for them so that they will be more active.
-Advice them to read. Reading can make their life livelier.
-Classes: dancing, chinese calligraphy, Qi Gong, drawings, chess etc

3.  The Workers
-The workers have bad attitude towards the visitors. For those homes which are lack of money, they will treat every single volunteer or visitor nicely. On the other hand, those homes which are well funded, the workers do not even bother to cater you because to them, we are actually wasting their time! I had an experience to this XXX home which is sponsored by a lot of big companies, the person in charge Mr X is very unfriendly. When I pass my two packs of Tiger biscuits to him, he straight away put them aside and do not even look at my eyes when I was asking him questions. Moreover, he keep looking at his watch and told me that he is rushing and have to leave soon, indirectly he is expelling me to get off soon as well.
This type of attitude needs to be changed because this will definitely spoil the image of the whole institution or even affect the public to look down to this home just because of one of the worker's attitude problem.

Solution:
-Owner of the home should always remind the workers to be friendly and supervise them from time to time to make sure that they are well behaved.
-Workers should attend some seminars so that they are aware of this issue
